Ken Burnett (Philanthropy Advisory Council) has been a fundraiser since 1977, when he joined the international development charity ActionAid as UK director. In 1983 he founded Burnett Associates Limited, which worked with fundraising organizations in Britain, Europe and around the world, producing some of the most original, donor- focused and effective communications campaigns to be found anywhere. He is currently chairman of the board of the communications and marketing agency the Cascaid Group. Until September 2003 he was chairman of the board of the International Fund Raising Group (now The Resource Alliance). Ken Burnett is author of several textbooks on fundraising communication including the worldwide best seller Relationship Fundraising, its sequel Friends for Life: Relationship Fundraising in Practice and co-author of How to Produce Inspiring Annual Reports.
Karen Osborne (Philanthropy Advisory Council) As a principal of the Osborne Group, a full service consulting company with proven expertise across a broad spectrum of management issues, Karen bring 26 years of fundraising, management and marketing experience to her clients' needs and aspirations. Prior to joining the firm, Karen served as VP for College Advancement at Trinity College in Hartford, CT where she was chief architect for over $30 million in principal gifts. Prior to going into Trinity, Karen served as Director at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she was responsible for helping develop and implement Rensselaer's successful $200 million campaign. Nationally and internationally recognized as an excellent presenter and workshop leader, Karen has taught a wide variety of fund raising and marketing topics at over 200 conferences and private sessions.
Cary Fulbright (Business Advisor) was the first Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and General Manager of the small business division at salesforce.com. He helped grow that company's revenues from $7 million to $165 million in four years and played a key role in taking the company public. He was also responsible for product strategy at salesforce.com, and drove the definition and launch of Enterprise Edition, Team Edition, and Supportforce. He has served as an executive at other on-demand application companies including ePeople, Rearden Commerce, Five9 and Saba. Cary held senior management positions in product management and marketing at a number of software companies, including: SAP, where he led Employee Self Service, Web-based procurement, and CRM strategy; Autodesk, where he directed all marketing and product management for AutoCAD and other CAD products; and Software Publishing Corp., where he was responsible for the Harvard Graphics products. He began his career in advertising at J. Walter Thompson on the Sprint, Chevron, and USAir accounts, among others. Fulbright earned a BS in international politics and a JD from Georgetown University, and an MBA from the University of California. He served on the board of directors and executive committee of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, and currently is treasurer and on the board of directors of the Arc of San Francisco and is a trustee of the Bay School of San Francisco.
Penny Herscher (Business Advisor) Penny joined FirstRain as CEO in late 2004 with the mission to solve the qualitative information overload problem of the institutional investor. She has developed FirstRain from a technology provider to the leading search-driven application provider to the financial services market. Prior to FirstRain, Penny was Chairman and CEO of Simplex Solutions, an electronic design automation company serving the global semiconductor industry. As CEO, she grew Simplex from a few engineers in 1996 to a high-growth, profitable software company. She led the company to an IPO in 2001 and through the sale of the company to Cadence Design Systems in 2002. Penny then worked at Cadence as Chief Marketing Officer and General Manager of a major division of the company. From 1988 to 1996, Penny was an early employee and executive at Synopsys. She started her career in 1982 as an R&D engineer with Texas Instruments and then Daisy Systems. Penny serves on the boards of FirstRain, Rambus, the Anita Borg Institute and CCPY (California Community Partners for Youth). Penny speaks on entrepreneurship, career management and technology challenges and has given talks at Berkeley, Stanford and Santa Clara business schools as well as for numerous industry organizations and women's career development organizations. She holds a B.A. with honors in mathematics from Cambridge University in England.
Charly Kleissner, PhD (Technical Advisor) has over seventeen years of experience as a senior technology executive in Silicon Valley. He is currently a partner in the Acumen Fund, and serves as an advisor and a board member for multiple nonprofit and for-profit start-up companies. Charly and his wife Lisa co-founded KL Felicitas Foundation, a family foundation dedicated to supporting social entrepreneurs worldwide. Until August 2001, Charly was Ariba's Sr. VP of Product Solutions globally. Prior to Ariba, he was VP of Product Development at RightPoint, and held senior engineering management positions at NeXT Software, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Hewlett-Packard. Charly earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science specializing in distributed databases from the University of Technology, Vienna. He authored two software patents and published numerous articles. Dr. Kleissner teaches university level courses on leadership, management and organizational development. He has developed workshops for successful social entrepreneurs which focus on sustainability and scalability of global social enterprises.
William Rosenzweig (Business Advisor) has had a prolific career as an entrepreneur, investor and brand builder, having lead a number of values-driven consumer products companies to success. He has been co-founder and CEO of The Republic of Tea, and award-winning speciality tea company; Sr. Vice President of Odwalla, the nation's largest fresh juice company; and Partner and CEO of Hambrecht Vineyards and Wineries. As an investor and board member, he co-founded Venture Strategy Group and has played a role in the development of Stonyfield Farms, Leapfrog, Ben and Jerry's and Putumayo. Will is on the faculty of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley where he teaches the MBA course in Social Entrepreneurship and serves as the faculty advisor to the Global Social Venture Competition. He is also an advisor to the Rockefeller Foundation's ProVenEx Double Bottom Line Investment fund. Will has co-authored several papers about Social Impact Assessment, the practice of measuring the intangible social and environmental value of mission-driven companies. Mr. Rosenzweig is the co-author of The Republic of Tea: How an Idea Becomes Business (Doubleday 1992) a best-selling book about how an idea becomes a business.
